experimenting with High Flow Acrylics on glossy photo paper. I liked the vivid

different techniques, I dripped small drops from the bottles but also used a
small paint brush as well as tried a new tool, an air blower. I might have
tilted the 4” x 6” surfaces to encourage movement.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

week off, just days before my dear love went into one hospital and then another and
stayed for almost a month before he passed away. My creativity, like me, went
into shock and then later disappeared as I dealt with more pressing matters. I
am still navigating the wild waters of grief and loss (and probably will be for
some time). But slowly, oh so slowly, I’m doing a bit of painting or gel
printing or working on a page spread in an art journal or trying simple
projects. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLS0Nz-ZUlP-SfSf9VFsVU403xIFEwAEifSVAsHbLagz08i0WGK2c9j_JmGShoSJget8en95KNCvCgxv8Ghdk5m_YmL1r5t2b07Z8D4Gn_xPz3Bg53117zupXW92R9prX9nCr8fCgkrO_2OM5Hp2gLsHuzBiS2erV3ag-u7JlQxIdOwy4aOFi882v6Kf8N/s3309/High%20Flow%20Acrylics%20on%20Glossy%20Photo%20Paper006.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1970" data-original-width="3309" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLS0Nz-ZUlP-SfSf9VFsVU403xIFEwAEifSVAsHbLagz08i0WGK2c9j_JmGShoSJget8en95KNCvCgxv8Ghdk5m_YmL1r5t2b07Z8D4Gn_xPz3Bg53117zupXW92R9prX9nCr8fCgkrO_2OM5Hp2gLsHuzBiS2erV3ag-u7JlQxIdOwy4aOFi882v6Kf8N/w400-h239/High%20Flow%20Acrylics%20on%20Glossy%20Photo%20Paper006.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p>Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10023139696088340742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-861706995665148491.post-72294034546792360162023-01-28T13:07:00.000-06:002023-01-28T13:07:34.083-06:00Color and Texture, Texture and Color<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaWTbPwpYeGN08M5-9H6njeiF2hbQhD9CalIl8sr2P00HEeOF8CMPoC-EX9rvA7p8mCZpGfUzROwCoW09uYj0ktuED6siD8UADbhnZpXqkcDLfG-HdivmYmkwl7BneBkDF9RINHNRTT0I9nqwWRrgiVgWAmCeG3fudcD5baE7zz8Ni0fHv5KlgSy9doQ/s2741/page%20background001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2407" data-original-width="2741" height="351" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaWTbPwpYeGN08M5-9H6njeiF2hbQhD9CalIl8sr2P00HEeOF8CMPoC-EX9rvA7p8mCZpGfUzROwCoW09uYj0ktuED6siD8UADbhnZpXqkcDLfG-HdivmYmkwl7BneBkDF9RINHNRTT0I9nqwWRrgiVgWAmCeG3fudcD5baE7zz8Ni0fHv5KlgSy9doQ/w400-h351/page%20background001.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Like a magnet, I am attracted color and texture. Smack! A beautiful
color combination or an interesting patch of texture can draw me in and make me
want more, and more!</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">After painting or gel printing, I can create interesting
leftovers when I clean off my brayer, stencils, or other tools on various papers.
Love the randomness and unintentional designs that appear, as if by magic.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Although I enjoy trying different things, when I use paint I
come home. Mainly, I adore acrylics. Last Sunday I focused on painting over a single
page in my new little handmade one-signature 6” x 7” book. My intention was to
create a background for attaching a fabric trim. This page was already painted
on hot-press watercolor paper but I gessoed over it which created a nice base
for what happened next.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Here is my original inspiration. If it had been larger, I
would have simply glued it in. But it was a little short.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> </span></o:p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"></span></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo1JakdqM9WZ2XLRFqN8M7YMl071RZp8SlkyydX2tjefc8HEz5o8SGPlC4U3q1_XHroehQU-U9nAOyghWjzvb_-TK_qokLediTiESbg9FpkCPJtngjAVBIFeo3APi3B7Pl93Y6PW9zI4Hau8BPMDnm_m4JM8xJw5XKMX6EbBmZ41YyEauN-YSOdmnhdw/s2819/blue%20and%20green%20background001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2060" data-original-width="2819" height="293" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo1JakdqM9WZ2XLRFqN8M7YMl071RZp8SlkyydX2tjefc8HEz5o8SGPlC4U3q1_XHroehQU-U9nAOyghWjzvb_-TK_qokLediTiESbg9FpkCPJtngjAVBIFeo3APi3B7Pl93Y6PW9zI4Hau8BPMDnm_m4JM8xJw5XKMX6EbBmZ41YyEauN-YSOdmnhdw/w400-h293/blue%20and%20green%20background001.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Not sure which exact paints I’d used in the original, I began
using both fluid and high flow acrylics and then branched out and invited some
acrylic inks into the mix. Using plastic cards, palette knives, a comb, and an occasional
brush stroke I got interesting effects since some of my fluid
acrylics are pretty old and drying out, making the paint thicker.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Now I really like this page. Will I leave it just as it is or add the 3-D element (green trim with beads I sewed on)? <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaHiZ4ntOqM">video</a> about making a
fabric covered art journal. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Using a large Strathmore hardcover watercolor journal already started and entitled “The Blues,” I went through my fabric stash. I
have three kinds: textured fabric already pressed into paint, old clothing I’ve
cut up and upcycled, and remnants from fabric stores. My finished cover has
some of all.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LzqEsddL1kY/YKL6fZgGU3I/AAAAAAAADhs/UWK9PZ0eEmY_fX9iqGCKpZrkXZ4Y7b6mwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/20210517_174814.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LzqEsddL1kY/YKL6fZgGU3I/AAAAAAAADhs/UWK9PZ0eEmY_fX9iqGCKpZrkXZ4Y7b6mwCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h225/20210517_174814.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Instead of using the adhesive Mary Beth did, I used Liquitex
Fabric Medium I’ve had for ages. Some of the non-cotton fiber pieces with paint were a bit difficult to glue down but they did stay.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This is such a </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">fun project and a great way to use up
bits and pieces. Once it’s dry, the cover feels great. This technique could
lend itself to all kinds of commercial and handmade journals, as well.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_sW-BNGMlv8/YKL6r9vT45I/AAAAAAAADhw/EdTYgT5mBG0xGyIeKefm1w1ZwAms6DW1QCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/20210517_174823.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_sW-BNGMlv8/YKL6r9vT45I/AAAAAAAADhw/EdTYgT5mBG0xGyIeKefm1w1ZwAms6DW1QCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h225/20210517_174823.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10023139696088340742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-861706995665148491.post-17551083909476550292021-04-09T18:36:00.001-05:002021-04-09T18:36:13.719-05:00Printmaking, Oh Printmaking<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_Mqs4yHwp3o/YHDg3ANL6cI/AAAAAAAADgc/fvOh0p-fRDwCIQ3FWiOJ8Qqv7IWIfxj_ACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Teal%2Band%2BPurple%2BFeathers038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1488" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_Mqs4yHwp3o/YHDg3ANL6cI/AAAAAAAADgc/fvOh0p-fRDwCIQ3FWiOJ8Qqv7IWIfxj_ACLcBGAsYHQ/w290-h400/Teal%2Band%2BPurple%2BFeathers038.jpg" width="290" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Seems like every weekend I’ve been printmaking and creating
piles of prints. There is the good, the not so good, and the downright ugly.
Some need more work. Some might like gel pens or colored pencils on them. Some that
I use to clean the plate with are almost as interesting as the ones I carefully
compose.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Printmaking is a lot work before and after. Prep work to get
papers ready, a space cleared, paints selected, a work surface to work on, a
place to put all the prints you finish. Then, it takes quite a while to clean
your tools—stencils, masks, palette knives, bone folders. It’s been a
time-saver to wear gloves!</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p><span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FNRPulxrX7E/YHDh0eE9RCI/AAAAAAAADgo/2JdOBTMYaV4v65EpUY8POAyG-HkiSLKEQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Navy%2Band%2BTeal%2BFeathers040.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1488" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FNRPulxrX7E/YHDh0eE9RCI/AAAAAAAADgo/2JdOBTMYaV4v65EpUY8POAyG-HkiSLKEQCLcBGAsYHQ/w290-h400/Navy%2Band%2BTeal%2BFeathers040.jpg" width="290" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Experimenting with different papers, as usual. Computer
paper, card stock, various types of greeting cards, watercolor paper,
mixed-media paper, printmaking paper. You need a lot of paper. Printmaking
paper is so dreamy that I’d like to make an entire journal with prints from it.
I have some on hand in both tan and light blue and could begin using the folios
for printing and only bind it as a book when all the pages are done.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Mixed media paper is quite good also. Shelley Rhodes great
tip of carefully snipping papers from coil books has been helpful but I also
rip it out when I need More Paper NOW! Interestingly, the snipped or ripped
pages both readily return to the book. I like that some brands feature a front
cover that is as sturdy as the back.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Some artists don’t completely clean the paint off their
plate before changing colors and actually like the gungy remains. I tried doing
that with these three prints. You can see some yellow ochre paint coming
through earlier prints. At first, I didn’t quite like it but have come around
to see the beauty in its messy imperfections.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></p>

There are so many
inspirational videos from the various commercial gel plate brands and their
artists. But what I haven’t seen much of is where to put prints when they are
wet.<o:p></o:p></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">From the </span><a href="http://mymindisinablog.blogspot.com/2008/06/gelatin-printmaking-101.html" style="font-family: helvetica;">first
time</a><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> I used gelatin up to now, the room I was working in was always full of
prints drying wherever there was a surface—couches, chairs, folding card
tables, the floor! There had to be a better way since now I don’t have space in
the living room because my work computer is set up there. My friend Nancy and I
discussed various options and I set about trying one. She suggested rigging a
rope from wall to wall and using clips.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NM8fwEYC2Fk/YGUOOqoYSkI/AAAAAAAADf4/HHdECrJhYjk1ozgaaWv114z4-2Kjq1XvwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/20210328_213554.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1152" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NM8fwEYC2Fk/YGUOOqoYSkI/AAAAAAAADf4/HHdECrJhYjk1ozgaaWv114z4-2Kjq1XvwCLcBGAsYHQ/w225-h400/20210328_213554.jpg" width="225" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I had lots of frame wire on hand and with a quick trip to
the grocery store had some light weight wood clothes pins. On the walls, I
screwed in medium hooks. On the wire, I made a loop at each end. I spaced out
the clothespins with some wood beads to give the prints space.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5JNq7JiBnW0/YGUOmlfp3-I/AAAAAAAADgA/m10qH4zbjTIlbWzqh4l2oi3i_7m_6EBgACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/20210328_213526.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5JNq7JiBnW0/YGUOmlfp3-I/AAAAAAAADgA/m10qH4zbjTIlbWzqh4l2oi3i_7m_6EBgACLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h225/20210328_213526.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">It turned out pretty good. I like that it is portable and I

weekend, after playing in <span style="background: white; color: #222222;">my Boho
Fabric Journal I was inspired to work with this face shard I've had for years,
from <a href="http://earthshards.com/shards/">Lyn Belisle</a>. The base was a rectangle
of crochet I made in color-changing yarn of purple, green, and teal colors.
There were four holes in the fired clay face—one at top, two on one side, and
one on the other. After lots of auditioning, rejecting, more auditions, more
rejections, I was running out of time and made several decision. One section is
braided yarn (left side), the other two have various beads—the thinner one is seed
beads on Irish linen thread.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span face="" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 14pt;">I made this necklace in June. The base was a
neat metal piece that looks like it’s from India—I’ve had it for ages. I wired
in the bells individually and even broke one of the holes while doing it—I’m
not much a skilled jewelry-maker (and that’s OK!).</span></p>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white;">I had a blast playing with my new 5" x 7" Gel Press plate, craft paints, ink, punched circles and rings! </span><span style="background-color: white;">Although I have a large size plate, I was curious about the versatility of making smaller pieces. The small plate is perfect to use on left over pieces of paper, inside handmade or commercial journals, and even on card stock or computer paper. The compact size also offers the ability to use the plate as a stamp.</span></span><br />
